May – Campus Happenings

May 1, 2019

It is good to look around campus and see the grass greening and buds coming out on the trees. Spring and fall are really the two best seasons to experience the beauty of the Sunrise campus. I am thankful for the work our maintenance team does to keep things looking great – regardless of the season!

Our nursing facility continues to work with the Alzheimer’s Association on the TTI360 project. We had over 100 employees attend a three hour training class with Lyn Hilgenberg in March and almost as many join her for another three hours right before Easter. She has a wonderful way of connecting with those she teaches and really gets everyone to thinking about what they can do on a daily basis to really “fill the cups” of each of the residents they serve. Her teaching and advice apply to everyone on campus, not just those who are living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. I am so energized to listen to the ideas that the caregivers have after spending time in her class. May will bring 2 new opportunities with this grant. First, Dr. Allen Power, the gerontologist and leader of the project will be on our campus to assist staff on May 13. Secondly, Amanda Brophy, of the Alzheimer’s Association will present a program for all interested families about dementia and its effects on the body. We are excited to be able to bring these resources to our campus!

Everyone knows there is always something going on at Sunrise! This month is no different. Mother’s Day will be celebrated as usual on Saturday, May 11 (see the inside of this newsletter for more information). Also, as one way to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we will be hosting a Chamber event on our campus called “Rush Hour Connect”. The event will be held on May 16 from 4:30-6pm and you are invited to join us for a light refreshment and quick hello. We will also be host-ing the Siouxland Senior Open Golf Tournament sponsored by Suter Services on June 7. We are looking for golfers (men and women) over the age of 50 that want to show off their skills with the Gunderson’s Cup as their prize. Registration can be done on our website at www.sunriseretirement.com.

We hope to see you all soon!
