Founding Member of the Siouxland Senior Open Selected as Honorary Chair

April 17, 2018

Jon Cleghorn has been selected as the Honorary Chair of the 26th annual Siouxland Senior Open.  The first tournament was played in 1992 where Cleghorn was one of the founding members of the premier golf event for men age 50+. Cleghorn has played in every tournament and won his age flight several years.  Cleghorn spends his winters in Arizona working on his game and is looking forward to playing with his standing four-some.

“I am honored to receive this designation, and I know I am in great company of the likes of Ray Nacke, Lila Frommelt, Chuck Avery, Clarence Carney and J.R. Castner.

In addition to his long-standing commitment with the Senior Open, Cleghorn is known for his strong support of youth golf.  He began volunteering for The First Tee in Sioux City in 2008, the first year of its operation in Sioux City. The national youth organization teaches life skills and core values to young people through the game of golf.  Last year the local chapter served more than 300 area youth.  He currently serves on the board of directors and is certified as a level III coach.  In 2017 The First Tee awarded him a Lifetime Coach membership.

Cleghorn was involved in the Web.com tour as a scorekeeper almost every year, and played in most of the pro-am tournaments.  He and his wife Anne hosted a player every year.  Jon and his wife have two children and five grandchildren.

Cleghorn will be honored at the awards banquet following tournament play on May 16 at Two Rivers Golf Clubhouse.  The tournament has raised nearly $400,000 for Siouxland not-for-profits serving seniors. This year’s proceeds will benefit Sunrise Retirement Community’s $2.8 million campaign for the renovation of their memory care center. Last year a women’s division was added. The winners of both the men and women’s divisions will receive the highly coveted Gunderson Cup and have their name inscribed on the Dale Mogren Memorial plaque.
