Ask The Nurse; Why do I have to take all of these medications?

September 10, 2021

Polypharmacy is defined as taking several medications that are not always needed & that place the elderly at an increased risk for harm from side effects or interactions. This results in several visits to the emergency room due to medication problems, which can also become costly.

Taking so many medications can also become very confusing to remember to take them correctly. Many people take medications they do not need. If you feel you are taking too many medications or are having difficulty paying for them, discuss this with your physician at your next visit. They may be able to assist in reducing the number of medications you have to take. Do not stop taking medications unless you have spoken to your physician first.
